Skelmersdale has units of the Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force and Sea Cadet Corps and all of them are routinely seen in the local community life. These include: Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic High School (an Engineering College), Lathom High School (a Technology College) and Glenburn Sports College. All of the high schools are co-ed. A large portion of Skelmersdale consists of housing estates, but they do also house the Co-operative Bank, which is the area's single largest employer, and several distribution centres. They are also home to a large public library that has free internet access and a large local history section.The local football team is Skelmersdale United and a former player, Steve Heighway, went on to play for Liverpool F.C. for many years. Archery is another popular sport in the area. Three individuals, all from the same family, hold 14 World Records.One of the very unique features in Skelmersdale is the Little Rebels Play Group, based at Digmoor Community Centre.
