Skelmersdale WN8
Skelmersdale has units of the Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force and Sea Cadet Corps and all of them are routinely seen in the local community life. An amazing feature of WN8 is the layout of the town. They have oversized roundabouts, the largest of which is called Half Mile Island, and there are no traffic lights whatsoever. They are trying to improve the system with the addition of signs; however, many visitors get lost. Areas of the New Town don't have ‘road' or ‘street' or ‘drive' attached to the end of their name; they are simply single-named roads. Skelmersdale has a number of primary schools, and three high schools. These include: Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic High School (an Engineering College), Lathom High School (a Technology College) and Glenburn Sports College. All of the high schools are co-ed. A large portion of Skelmersdale consists of housing estates, but they do also house the Co-operative Bank, which is the area's single largest employer, and several distribution centres. They are also home to a large public library that has free internet access and a large local history section. The local football team is Skelmersdale United and a former player, Steve Heighway, went on to play for Liverpool F.C. for many years. Archery is another popular sport in the area. Three individuals, all from the same family, hold 14 World Records. One of the very unique features in Skelmersdale is the Little Rebels Play Group, based at Digmoor Community Centre. This group aims to enhance the lives of families by offering support to both adults and children within the area of benefit. The members share skills and experience, build confidence, reduce isolation, encourage the development of family life and help form cohesion within the community. This would be an ideal place for couples who plan to start a family, have children, or are parents with young children who might need that extra support around them.
