Not everyone is after an hour’s discussion about Eastenders, or necessarily cares about what miley cyrus has done now. We’re not saying you must know a little about everything, that’s pretty much impossible, but we find a little knowledge about all sorts of topics from popular culture to hard-hitting news ticks far more boxes and caters for everyone.
The most important aspect of conversation is listening and asking the appropriate questions. It’s a fact that we love talking about yourselves, and whilst this seems selfish, you can definitely use this to your advantage. By asking the right questions, your client feels valued, and it also takes the pressure off you as well.
How are the kids? Isn’t the weather awful? Are you going on holiday soon? All very stereotypical, and very boring, questions! Even just rephrasing these three can mix up the conversation as well as stopping you feel like a robot day-in-day-out!
Silences don’t need to be awkward! Chatting continually throughout the duration of your session with a customer is EXHAUSTING! Encouraging silences at certain points gives you the opportunity to focus on what you’re doing, and a chance for them to have a quiet break. For example, we love having our hair professionally washed at the salon and this is the ideal point to keep schtum.
Knowing when the conversation has ended and looking for that opening to flow into the next is such a talent. The best way to achieve this is to include small stories and antidotes of your own. For example, you are both currently talking about the nightlife around your area; when you feel the conversation coming to a close, why not mention a funny story that happened recently, or even something you might have seen in the news about drinking culture…
