Magazine » How to wear A Cardigan and Still Look Cool
Yes, it is possible to wear your gran’s clothing and still look cutting edge enough to hang with the ‘it’ crowd…
Before you fobb this off as yet another write up about how granny chic is “in”, let us put your mind at ease and assure you it’s not where we’re going with this. In fact, we’re going against the grain and taking cardigans away from granny altogether! You see, up until recently we viewed this cosy throw-over as way of warming up while watching TV or feeling cosy while at our desks. Then we came across a slew of celebs rocking them out in unconventional ways (teaming with clompy boots is way more ‘Nirvana style’ than tea with nan) and we had a light bulb moment. Cardigans can be worn and still look cool.
Sienna Miller works her simple navy cardi (1. Equipment, £370) with a pair of slouchy pyjama style pants (2. Tibi, £310). It should look like she’s just stepped out of bed, but the clever use of an ‘it’ bag (3.Whistles, £295) and block heels (4. Proenza Schouler Nubuck Leather Sandals, £514) has transformed it from tired to fashion wired.
Then there’s Alexa Chung, aka the queen of preppy style. If ever we were to look towards anyone for a‘hot nerd’ vibe, it’d be her. Who would think to go all-out and match a cardigan (5. Vanessa Bruno, £250) with a cute Bow Tie (6. Saint Laurent, £265)? Her choice of flats (7. ASOS Lake Two Part Ballerinas, £22) always balance things nicely too and never take an outfit overboard, so take note!
Last but not least, there’s Jennifer Aniston. We’ve got to admit, she’s not always our first choice when it comes to fashion. Sure, she has amazing style and every time we actually do take a look at what she’s wearing we fall in love with the simplicity of it, she just evades our brains when it comes to putting outfits together. Well, she did evade our brains, until we spotted her in a chic draped cardigan (8.Splendid, £160), cinched in at the waist with a show-stopping belt (9. Miu Miu, £185). The result? A jaw dropping street get-up!
