Forest Hill, as implied by its name, is a hilly area which boasts excellent views of Kent and Central London. A trek up Canonbie Road or Netherby Road would fail to disappoint. The explorer or fortunate resident is rewarded with spectacular views of Battersea Park power station, the Millenium Dome, Big Ben and several other prominent London landmarks. This view is even more remarkable at night. The area retains traces of the Great North Woods and is generally considered to be a pleasant and leafy suburb. Vast expanses of greenery can be found in the form of Dulwich Park and Sydenham Hill Wood. These are both only a bus-ride away from SE23. Brenchley Gardens on Forest Hill Road is a small park which accommodates some of the finest flower beds in Southwark. Within the area, Honor Oak and Brockley Rise are home to a number of sports grounds with facilities for football, cricket, tennis and rugby. A notable attraction in the area is the Horniman Museum and its surrounding gardens on London Road. The Museum was opened in 1901 and is home to the artefacts collected by Victorian tea trader Frederick John Horniman. His collection ranges from ancient musical instruments to more bizarre objects such as a torture chair. The museum is also famed for its new aquarium which offers innovative tank-viewing dens, home to wildlife from across the globe. The Horniman Museum is set in 16 acres of well-maintained landscaped land with lush rose gardens and herbaceous borders. In 2007, the gardens were awarded a Green Flag which denotes excellence in recreational green areas. The gardens are also Grade II listed in recognition of their historic significance. A more recent addition is the Centre for Understanding the Environment, an ecologically friendly building used as the Horniman Library. Added to the list of perks for residents and regular visitors is free admission to the museum and its gardens. Dartmouth Road is home to Forest Hill Library and one of the oldest swimming pools in London.There are around a dozen pubs and bars in the region. The Dartmouth Arms, Bar Equal and The Railway Telegraph are just a few examples. The Hob, on Devonshire Road is a pub geared towards entertaining its guests with pub quizzes, live music, karaoke, board games and a comedy club. The centre of Forest Hill is located at the junction of London Road (A205) and Dartmouth Road (A2216), near to the station. There are a number of eateries on Dartmouth Road, London Road, Brockley Rise and Stanstead Road. These include restaurants specialising in Caribbean, Indian and Oriental cuisine, as well as the usual fast food outlets such as burger, kebab and fish & chip shops. Those in search of a good English breakfast are encouraged to head to Westbourne Café on Westbourne Drive.There is a supermarket on London Road and a number of newsagents and convenience stores in the local vicinity. A small parade of shops, restaurants and other businesses can be found along Honor Oak Park. The area is bordered by the towns of Sydenham, Crystal Palace, Dulwich and Brockley which may cater better for the shopping needs of locals. SE23 is around six miles away from Central London and there are excellent transport links in the area with Forest Hill and Honor Oak stations serving Charing Cross, West Croydon and London Bridge (15 minutes). There are plans to extend the East London Line to include Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill and Sydenham stations by 2010. The South Circular (A205) runs through the region, connecting Forest Hill to Dulwich along main roads, London Road and Lordship Lane.
