East Dulwich SE22
SE22 is sandwiched between busy Peckham and Dulwich Village and inevitably combines characters of both. Although some signs of the rougher East Dulwich are still visible, things appear to be looking up. There has been a notable mushrooming of specialist shops in the area that has served to recapture a sense of rural community. Lordship Lane (A2216) has been referred to as the “artery” of East Dulwich, with justification, as it houses much of the area's facilities. Historically, it is the area's oldest street and the birth place of the famous children's author, Enid Blyton. Today, locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out with a seemingly endless list of cuisines to chose from - Indian, Thai, Chinese, Italian, French, Brazilian, Texan, etc! There are a number of other shops along this main road, including furniture and DIY stores. The small Somerfield supermarket on the Lane is convenient for grocery shopping, but is dwarfed by the large 24-hour Sainsbury's further afield on Dog Kennel Hill. North Cross Road has emerged from the shadows of traditionally busier Lordship Lane with its new collection of trendy businesses. The Blue Mountain Café, renowned for its cakes and friendly service, greengrocer Pretty Traditional, gift shop Grace and Favour, children's bookshop The Neverending Story and boutique-style beauty outlet Dr. Boo, are just a peek at the available line-up of specialist shops. On the same road is a market where an assortment of freshly baked bread and cakes, gifts, books, crafts, CDs, handmade jewellery and vintage clothing can all be bought on the same shopping trip. North Cross Road could also be a destination for art connoisseurs and enthusiasts with its two new galleries: Lichtaffen and Space Station. Dulwich Hamlets Football Club and neighbouring health club on Edgar Kail Way off Dog Kennel Hill caters for the sporting and recreation needs of locals, offering massage, martial arts, yoga and other classes. Similar facilities can be found at the Dulwich Leisure Centre on Goose Green. Fans of the great outdoors would not be disappointed here; Dulwich Park in the nearby village is packed with public amenities such as the Dry Garden, a children's playground and a designated picnic area. Sports facilities such as a bowling green, tennis courts and football pitches are also provided. Further away, Peckham Rye offers similar services with the addition of a free skate park. Keen explorers can catch the 63 bus or a train to Forest Hill/Sydenham Hill station to reach Sydenham Hill Woods along Crescent Wood Road. This is best described as an ancient woodland area full of exciting things to see. There are a number of small ponds, the ruins of an ancient monastery and hidden wood sculptures to discover. Dulwich Library is located on Lordship Lane , close to Dulwich Park and offers an array of facilities beyond the usual book lending and reference services. It contains a comprehensive collection of CDs and runs a number of workshops. The library is open until as late as 8 pm on Tuesdays.East Dulwich and North Dulwich train stations provide links to the south, stopping at East Croydon, Epsom, Gatwick and Gypsy Hill. Services also run north to London Bridge. The area is well served by buses which run through the busy main road of Lordship Lane and East Dulwich Grove.
