Top Tips to Keep Your Locks Luscious

Your hair is one of your most important assets; it’s the finishing touch to any outfit and one that is always with you. It is something you are constantly judged on, and let’s be honest, something we generally judge other people on. If someone is working an unkempt greasy mop you cannot help but believe it is an indication of how they live their lives. This aside, perfect hair is notoriously hard to achieve, and as much as we all want Cheryl Cole’s stunning locks we must remember she has a TEAM of hairstylists, and sadly this is out of reach for most of us. However, here at Secret Salons we have combined a list of top hair care tips to help you get the most out of your barnet.

1. Using Heat Protection products

It is important to remember that hair may appear tough and durable but it is in fact extremely delicate, and needs to be treated generally with the delicacy of lace. Consequently our daily barrage of hairdryers, straighteners and tongs cannot be good news for our precious locks. Therefore using protective products is a must to keep our hair in good condition after all that styling.

2. Using a Good Brush

A good hairbrush is so important in keeping hair looking great, it keeps the hair smooth and soft to the touch. However, it is important to bear in mind that brushes should not be used for detangling, but for polishing and smoothing the hair. For detangling hair you should use a comb at the ends, or use your fingers. Brushing hair for detangling can do more damage than good, causing split ends and broken hair. However, you should brush your hair every day, using a boar bristle brush for best results.

3. Use Products Tailored for your Hair

This may seem simplistic advice but it is surprising how many people do not use shampoo and conditioners that fulfil the needs of their hair. If you have coloured hair then products specially formulated for coloured hair are a must, they not only help the colour last longer but help enhance the tones and hues of your locks. This advice also applies for naturally frizzy and curly hair, don’t hide behind your hedge of hair but solve the problem using a frizz defying shampoo and a good serum. And obviously if your hair fits this bill never use a brush, ever.

4. Trim Your Hair Regularly

Having your hair trimmed on a regular basis is a must for keeping your hair in good nick. Far too many people make the mistake of going for months without a trim, especially when trying to grow it, but this just results in the split ends splitting up the hair shaft, damaging the hair and creating frizz. So the hair they have grown actually ends up looking worse as is spikes out all over the place. Having the ends nicked off every 8 weeks really helps with keeping the rest of the hair looking and feeling good.

5. A Brazilian Blow Dry

Now this may be a new concept to you but believe us you will soon wonder how you ever lived without them. A Brazilian blow dry leaves your hair kink-free and touchably soft after just one session, and lasts for up to four months. The treatment works by injecting your hair with pure keratin (a substance that exists naturally in nails, skin and hair) to keep your hair nourished. The product is left to apply for 30 minutes or more so that your strands can soak up all of that keratiney goodness. The hair is then dried locking in all that gorgeous lustre.

6. Shampoo Hair Twice

Now this rumour has been around for years but it really does help to keep your hair in good shape! The purpose of the fist shampoo is to clean the oil and dirt off, and the second lets the shampoo actually treat your hair – makes sense doesn’t it? Second time around really lather the shampoo and let it sit around for a couple of minutes so your hair can really absorb the full effect and voila! Beautiful locks.

7. Give Your Hair a Holiday

Every once in a while just let your hair dry naturally, giving it a rest from the usual wear and tear it experiences when being dried and styled. The first step is to use products formulated for air drying, instead of blow drying, and gently remove excess moisture using an absorbent towel. Also a piece of advice that is of the utmost importance...Do Not Rub Your Hair. This is a somewhat catastrophic error that damages the strands causing frizzy hair and split ends. Giving hair a chance to relax makes it much softer and shinier, before it has to rejoin the morning regime.

8. Getting enough Vitamins

And lastly, but not least, there is this essential tip. For gorgeous locks you need to provide your body with the right vitamins and minerals to keep the shine and strength in your hair. It is important to make sure you get a steady intake of B, C and E vitamins, as well as inositol, zinc and L-Cysteine and L-methionine. Now these may sound like made up words but they really help maintain good hair growth and prevent hair loss.
