Prepare yourselves. A new beauty treatment has hit the shores of our little island and it is already whirling up a storm. Cool Sculpting is the newest way to lose weight; its targets are the small bulges of fat that no matter what you do you cannot seem to budge. Hurrah! It is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction straight from the U.S. and goes by the name of Zeltiq. Sounds like a character from a Sci-Fi film doesn’t it? But for some this is the solution they have been looking for to the body hang ups they’ve long been suffering from. 

It was developed by the smart alecs over at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital and can destroy up to 25% of fat cells in one area after one session. The procedure takes the alternative stance to the previously popular procedure of heating the fat cells and has proved more effective. Cool Sculpting uses a cooling method called cryolipolysis to target, chill and break down fat cells without causing damage to other tissue. It achieves this by pressing cooling plates on the desired areas for about an hour, with very minimal discomfort. The area is cooled to such a temperature that the fatty tissue is killed, leaving other important tissues unharmed. The temperature of the fat cells is reduced right down to zero degrees, so the cells are literally frozen until they die.

Zeltiq’s combination of science and technology destroys the unwanted fatty tissue whilst putting the body’s metabolism to work. Cold temperatures can reduce the thickness of the fat layer without having an effect on other types of cell. The body then naturally digests the dead cells and removes the dead fat cells, leaving you with the body contours you desire. 

According to the website after just one Cool Sculpting procedure, the patient's body goes to work. Over the next two to four months, the crystallized fat cells break down and are naturally eliminated from the body. It all sounds simple enough, if a little bit chilly, but it important to consider there are risks with any type of procedure. For those stubborn areas that refuse to budge though this could be the answer; however it is less effective on larger areas, such as the bottom of the thighs. The treatment is currently only available in the UK at Beyond MediSpa at Harvey Nichols, London, and costs £800 per area.
