Colindale NW9
NW9 has a number of green spaces and parks which locals and visitors use to relax and escape the busy local streets. Brent Reservoir, otherwise known as The Welsh Harp, is a fine example, which can be found on Cool Oak Lane. The reservoir is a nature reserve that houses a variety of wildlife species, including different types of water birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There are also a number of fish in the water, although fishing is strictly prohibited. These creatures flourish in the 170 hectares of land available to them, which consists of water, grassland, woodland and marshland. Facilities in the reservoir include a sailing centre, two bird hides and The Welsh Harp Environmental Education Centre. The area is popular with walkers and bird watchers. Fryent Country Park is also a nature reserve, with 103 hectares of land. It is bisected by Fryent Way. Another popular green space is Roe Green Park on Kingsbury Road. This park includes sports pitches, a playground for children and a walled garden. Other parks in the area include Silver Jubilee Park on Townsend Lane (which also has a children's playground and sports pitches), Queensbury Park on Honeypot Lane and Kingsbury Sports Ground on Elthorne Way. Public transport in NW9 is good, with a number of options. The underground stations in the postcode district include Kingsbury Tube on Kingsbury Road, which operates on the Jubilee line and Colindale Tube on Collindale Avenue which runs on the Edgware branch of the Northern line. There are also a number of bus routes that serve the area. For those interested in the history of aviation, The Royal Air Force Museum can be found on Grahame Park Way and is free of charge. The museum boasts over 130 aircraft, although these are not all out on display, as well as uniforms, photos and art relating to flying. Facilities include a gift shop, a café, a restaurant and a picnic area.
