New Malden KT3
New Malden High Street is the heart of all commercial activity within KT3. The area is characterised by a significant number of Korean restaurants, cafés and specialist grocery stores. It is interesting to observe that a lot of the signage is translated into Korean script.Hamgipak café and Sorabol are examples of local Korean eateries. The High Street is also home to a typical curry house, Lal Akash, and some traditional Japanese restaurants, such as Yoshi Sushi. Fans of Italian cuisine are not forgotten with Al Fourno located nearby and Ferretti on Coombe Road. Pizza Piazza on the High Street is reported to have been around since 1984 and is still a local favourite. Both supermarkets on the High Street and on Beverly Way, and a number of smaller independent convenience stores cater for the grocery shopping needs of residents. Tudor Williams is a family-run department store which offers among other goods, clothing, cosmetics and furniture. A short walk up the same High Street leads to a large Woolworths superstore. New Malden lies at a short distance to the busy town centres of Kingston and Wimbledon, where residents can benefit from a more comprehensive retail selection and recreation facilities.New Malden Library on Kingston Road hosts a variety of clubs and classes besides the usual lending and reference services. The local pubs which reflect the pleasant community atmosphere of the area can be found on the High Street, Malden Road, Kingston Road and Coombe Road. The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) once named Woodies on Thetford Road "Pub of the Year" in the Kingston & Leatherhead region.Despite being so near to the busy urban centres of Kingston and Wimbledon, New Malden has a number of parks and open spaces. The area is bordered by the vast green expanse of Wimbledon Common. The Blagdon Road open space off the High Street is a small 3-acre site home to a children's playground and a ball court. Footpaths running through the park provide convenient and pleasant short cuts from the A3 to the centre of town. Neighbouring the park is the Malden Leisure Centre which offers a gym and traditional swimming pool. Kingston Road recreation ground is a larger area accommodating 3 tennis courts, a playground and two football pitches. Beverly Park on Park View is even more substantial with 17.5 acres dedicated to a playground, a picnic area, allotments and facilities for tennis, football and cricket. Malden Golf Club on Traps Lane dates from 1926 and has hosted matches between renowned golfers such as Ted Ray and Harry Vardon. New Malden has its own youth theatre, The Green Theatre Company on Barton Green. KT3 is best described as a commuter haven. The area is well served by regular trains to Waterloo (20 minutes), Clapham Junction and Kingston. Bus routes passing through the area provide links to Tooting (131), South Wimbledon Station (152, 655), Sutton (213), Tolworth (265), Kingston (K1), Heathrow Airport (X26) and a number of other destinations. There are also two night buses (N87, N213) which operate in the region.Additionally, the A3 trunk road which runs along Kingston Bypass, Malden Way and then Beverly Way provides good connections to London. Junction 9 at Leatherhead on the M25 is roughly a half an hour drive away.
